Press Release

Half/Dozen is pleased to present About Framing by Avantika Bawa. This exhibition, created in response to the architecture, scale, and location of the gallery, explores moments between drawing and sculpture, intuition and calculation.

Thinking about the traditional role of frames, Bawa’s work addresses the tension between containment and dispersal. In so doing, the artist redefines frames not only as carriers of art but as art objects in and of themselves. Drawing on the legacy of Minimalism and its emphasis upon reductive form, modularity, and literal scale, this work puts the act of drawing into the service of sculptural design, allowing handmade gestures to connect with architectural supports. These pieces reflect the culture and geography of the time and space from which they emerge. About Framing allows for subtlety and anti-monumentality through unexpected levels of precision.
