The Proper Etiquette When Working With Nude Models

Being a nude model can be challenging, so there is no need to make it more difficult than it is. Whether we are talking about photography, painting, drawing, or any other type of erotic art, there are several rules you should follow. The idea behind this rule is to create a safe environment and make models feel safe, which is the only way to create a masterpiece.

Be Clear Whether You Want Them to Be Nude or Not

If you are a painter, you need to ensure that your model knows all the facts. For example, it is possible to paint a nude without the model being naked at all. In some art classes, a model will pose clothed, and the students will paint their faces only. The rest of the body, students will draw naked, and they will use the model’s pose as a reference.

That is why you should talk to your model beforehand so they can know what to expect and whether they should undress or not. Some people won’t feel comfortable undressing in a room full of strangers, and you should tell them about your plans as soon as possible. That way, if that’s not something they’d enjoy, you can find another model or change your tactics so both artists and models can be happy.

Setting boundaries is one of the most important steps in art modeling, and it will make everyone on the set feel comfortable, so be sure to plan everything ahead. Both methods we mentioned are excellent, and students and artists can do a lot even though they are painting only the face. The only thing you need to remember is that communication is crucial.

The last thing you need is for the model to expect a portrait and then to be asked to undress.

Do Not Touch the Models

Under no circumstances should you touch a model, especially if they are posing nude. It is the easiest way to make the situation uncomfortable, and you should avoid it at all costs. If you are a photographer, there is a high chance that you will also have a hairstylist and a make-up artist, and it’s their job to set the scene and make your model glow.

There is no reason for you to do anything but your job. That applies to painters too. In art classes, each student will sit at their desks, and they shouldn’t be anywhere near the models. Nude figure drawing is fun, but being naked will make the model feel exposed and vulnerable, and you don’t need to make it awkward.

If you want their arm to be in a different position, tell them to move slightly, but don’t take matters into your own hand and touch them.

The Model’s Comfort Comes First

If you’re looking to create a piece of art, your model should be happy, and their comfort should be your number one priority. There are numerous ways to achieve that. Firstly, try to do your best to make them feel safe and always act professionally.

The easiest way to do this is to talk to them while doing your job. If you are taking photos, let them know what you’re doing, what kind of effect you’re looking for, lightning, and everything else. They are a part of the process, and they should feel involved.

You should always respect their personal space and never talk about their body.

You’re not making still art, and you are working with a human form. However, some models dislike chatting during the session, and you should respect their decision. For them, it might be distracting and won’t allow them to focus on their jobs. So, talk to them before the model session to see which option works for them the best.

Remember that their comfort should always be before your interest.

Choose a Comfortable and Appropriate Environment

If you are not familiar with the model, talk to them before the session starts. This way, you can explain what you’re looking for, and it is the best way to lighten the mood. Furthermore, try to find a place that will make them feel comfortable.

Of course, if we’re talking about the art class, you will probably have a classroom for this type of modeling, and that’s ok. The only important thing is to have the appropriate environment.

When it comes to photography, inviting someone to your place can be creepy unless you are a well-known photographer who has a reputation and is known for their art and style.

Drawing classes can be fun, but academies are often strict, and each student will be focusing on their art and worrying about grades. If you are looking for a way to lighten the mood, chatting is the way to go. Both the model and artists will feel better, and it is a much more charismatic environment.

Don’t Bring Any Camera or Your Cell Phone

Unless you are a photographer, there is no need for you or anyone else to carry a cell phone. Posing nude for a drawing group is a lot different from nude photography. And one does not automatically imply the other. People who are posing naked in academies do not need their nude photos taken, and you should ensure that everyone follows the rule.

Smartphones today can make excellent photographs, and everything can be posted online in a matter of seconds. So you should ensure that none of your students can do that. Moreover, models are often allowed to terminate the pose if they notice a phone or a camera anywhere.

You and everyone else on your team need to act like professionals, so keep everyone informed, and ensure that they follow the rules. There is no need for cameras or any similar device!
