Half/Dozen Gallery presents Plans for the New City by Gala Bent. Plans for the New City examines the way that a city, and even a single building, can act as a utopian vision of paradise on earth or a mystical vision of “The New City.”
The imagery in Bent’s work explores how the buildings we reside in can take on a life of their own, almost becoming creatures in themselves. Cities have neurological systems in the form of communication networks, venal systems of water and waste. In a conceptual parallel, Bent’s drawings make use of hair, eyes, bodies and animals that become biological-architectural systems. But the work is also skeptical of the possibilities of finding perfect civic balance, and the cracks and leaks are plainly visible.
Half/Dozen Gallery is pleased to present a group exhibition featuring six artists. This exhibition brings together work that is at once akin and in stark contrast. This group of six artists complement each other in peculiar ways, from the dreamlike drawings of Gala Bent to the heavily conceptual digital collages of Laura Mackin to the opposing forces in John Berry’s paintings; there are themes of observation, searching and discovery. The photos of Lisa Berry take a quiet, subtle look at the world just outside our view while Artur Silva’s provocative video speaks boldly and pointedly about capitalism and culture. Lisa Kowalski’s tempting paintings invite us to forget where we are and soak up the vibrant colors and bold marks. The show will run from September 3rd to September 26th.
Half/Dozen Gallery is pleased to present This Close That Far by artist Lisa Berry. This body of work explores how unknown figures become guides to curious new places. Sometimes from a distance, sometimes up close and other times out of the image all together, Lisa’s work focuses on the figures that direct us. These mysterious guides are showing us the worlds they inhabit while leading us into new ones. Lisa uses a traditional medium format film and camera for all her work.
Half/Dozen Gallery in pleased to present Laura Mackin and her show Wedding Heads This new body of work takes a continued look into the sorting and archiving of images from eBay, which has become a cornerstone in much of Mackin’s recent work. Gathering found images from auctions of used wedding dresses, Mackin has put together a body of work that brings together moments of the extraordinary and of the mundane.
Denver biased artist Lisa Kowalski will be opening her show 10 Paintings Aril 2nd in which she shows 10 pieces that are not meant to be narrative, but visual explorations. These explorations evoke sensation in the viewer that are not bounded by the literal, but can be broadly identified as physical, spiritual or psychological.
Artur Silva premiers as our first artist at Half/Dozen Gallery. Through this series, Brazilian born artists Artur Silva explores his own struggle in a commodity-driven culture and how he negotiates his existence in this system. 50 limited edition prints will be sold in conjunction with this show.
